We are pleased to announce Professor Ibrahim Agboola Gambari CFR, as chairman of the Panel of Judges for the forthcoming NCMG Peace Award, 2018.
A former Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs (1984-1985), Professor Gambari began his illustrious career in International Relations and Diplomacy as Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the United Nations (1990-1999). He served in many positions under the United Nations (UN). He became the first United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Special Advisor to the Secretary-General on Africa (1999-2005) and was also appointed in 2007 by the Secretary-General as Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser on Iraq Compact and other issues, a position he held until 2009.
As a scholar, Ambassador Gambari is the author of several books and scholarly articles. He began his teaching career as a Lecturer at the Queen’s College, City University of New York (1969-1974), followed by an Assistant Professorship at the State University of New York (1974-1977). Upon returning to Nigeria, he was appointed Senior Lecturer at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, (1977-1980), and rose to become full Professor in 1983. In 2002, Professor Gambari was elected to the Johns Hopkins University Society of Scholars and has since 2005 served as a member of the International Advisory Board of the Institute of Peace, Leadership and Governance at Africa University, Zimbabwe. He was also appointed as First Chancellor, Kwara State University in Nigeria, March 2013.
A recipient of the third highest national honour, Commander of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (CFR), Professor Gambari is currently the founder and chairman of Savannah Center for Diplomacy, Democracy and Development (SCDDD), a non-governmental organization that focuses on the nexus between peace, democracy and development.
Members of the NCMG Peace Awards, panel of judges have been selected based on their high profile bothering on integrity, wealth of experience of peace and justice building, institutional development and youth empowerment in ensuring that the very deserving change agents and innovative thought leaders are awarded. It is truly an honour to have the former Ambassador chair the Panel of Judges of the 2018 NCMG Peace Awards. With his involvement, NCMG International is confident that the objective of the NCMG Peace Awards to recognise change agents and innovative thought leaders championing justice and peace in Africa will be achieved again this year.
