Out of the desperate need to address manifold challenges that have plagued the African continent came the founding of the Negotiation and Conflict Management Group (NCMG); an independent, not-for-profit, non-governmental organization committed to the promotion of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Mechanisms as the default means of conflict management. The organization that was incorporated in Nigeria in 1996 translated due to global demands and opportunities into an international brand with major focus on promoting and advocating for world peace and conflict management within the Africa continent; the NCMG thus became NCMG International as approved by its Board of Governors with its Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland in 2012.
Since its establishment and repositioning, the NCMG International has been on the vanguard of ADR development in Africa, and continues to advance the frontiers of this relatively new industry through collaboration and partnership with relevant institutions across Europe, America and the African continent. For the past 20 years, we have been at the forefront of capacity development and innovation in Africa through constructive engagements, judicial reform, cultural orientation and sustained proliferation of ADR practices. We link our knowledge and expertise with those of our partners to support and participate in the development of local and international strategies for change. We leverage our competence with the collective intelligence of these partners to develop bespoke solutions to entrenched challenges within governments, MDAs and corporations among others.
Through a systemic process of sensitization of the Judiciary, Bar, Corporate Organizations, government and public through workshops, networking, seminars and conferences, the NCMG International established; The Lagos Multi-Door Courthouse (LMDC) – the first court-connected ADR Centre in Africa in June, 2002; subsequent replication by the judiciary of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, in November 2003. Today, the multi-door courthouse concept has been replicated in fifteen states High Courts in Nigeria, while NCMG has also saw to the extension of the concept in the Appellate Courts, hence the birth of the Supreme Court Mediation Centre and Court of Appeal Mediation Centre in 2016/2017.
In 2011, NCMG International in collaboration with the University of Lagos established the UNILAG-NCMG College of Negotiation (“College of Negotiation”) a specialized institution committed to the study, teaching and research in the field of Negotiation, Mediation, Arbitration and conflict management mechanisms.
The NCMG International Global Board of Governors is headed by Justice M.L. Uwais, a former Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria while the Regional Board of Directors, West Africa is chaired by Justice Ayotunde Phillips and the Regional Board of Directors, East Africa is chaired by Justice James Ogoola. NCMG International was founded by Kehinde Aina, a partner with the law firm of Aina Blankson, LP.
